Introduction to Solo: A Star Wars Story Movie Review by Ms. H

After months of rumors about this particular Star Wars movie, it has finally been released in movie theaters. You may be wondering if you should watch this movie in the theater, or if you should wait for Solo: A Star Wars Story to go to DVD or become available on streaming online services.  My movie review will help you make this decision.

Plot of Solo: A Star Wars Story Movie

From my viewpoint, it was difficult to identify exactly if Han Solo was a good guy, a bad guy or someone in between.  We all know that to take something that does not belong to you and give it to someone else for a price is not what a good guy would do.  But then you have to ask yourself if this is really the plot of the movie. Or did the movie plot involve Han Solo returning to his romantic interest after being away for some time.  Maybe the plot was for Han Solo to become the pilot he always wanted to be. Your guess is as good as mine regarding the answer to these questions. I think the movie could have been easier to follow if there was a main plot, rather than a lot of “mini” subplots.

Acting Abilities of the Actors in Solo: A Star Wars Story Movie

I think that for the most part, the actors did an adequate job performing their roles in the movie.  I don’t consider this a spoiler when I say that there are no big emotional scenes between any of the characters or any other actions that would warrant Oscar buzz or recognition.

Highlights of Solo: A Star Wars Story Movie

Without spoiling the movie for you, there are several highlights in Solo: A Star Wars Story.  Among these highlights are discovering how Han Solo got his name, how he met his friend, Chewbacca as well as how he became a pilot of the Millennium Falcon. Of course there were other highlights, but these stood out for me.

Predictability of Solo: A Star Wars Story Movie

There are several scenes in the movie that you will probably know what will happen next.  The writer/director may try to mislead you about certain happenings in the movie to drum up suspense; however, you will probably not be surprised with what occurs in this movie.

Pros of Solo: A Star Wars Story Movie

Some of the pros include there are a number of action scenes in the movie that will probably keep your interest. Additionally, Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover were good choices to play Han Solo and Lando Calrissian respectively. Both played their characters as pals with no ill-feelings toward each other.

If you watch this movie, you may get some “old school” vibes that might remind you of earlier Star Wars movies -- i.e., Star Wars: Episode IV -  A New Hope. This is due in part to the lighting used for the movie that gives a nostalgic look to some of the scenes. A plus for this movie is it is rated PG-13 so just about the whole family can see the movie, including small children if they are with their parents.

Another pro is you do not have to pay anything additional if you use MovePass to see Solo: A Star Wars Story movie.  Sometimes If a movie is popular, MoviePass requires you to pay a small amount out of your pocket, such as $1.50. This is not the case for Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Cons of Solo: A Star Wars Story Movie

In addition to the ambiguity of the plot as well as the predictability of the movie, a major con of Solo: A Star Wars Story movie is the timing of the release of the movie.  As you know, in the movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens that was releasaed in 2015, Harrison Ford as Han Solo met his demise. When I watched Alden Ehrenreich as the younger Han Solo, I could not help but think of the sad events that happen to his character in the aforementioned movie.

Another con was the impression I got that Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian was trying to emulate this character as played by Billie Dee Williams from the earlier Star Wars movie -- which I think was unnecessary. All he had to do was to act out his role as the character of Lando Clarrisman instead of trying to mimic Billie Dee Williams.

Another con of the movie is the low-key character Qui’ra. I think the wardrobe staff could have done a better job designing outfits and dressing Emilia Clarke who played Qui’ra. Her character, in my opinion was sort of bland.  She did have a few fight scenes that also did not stand out to me.

Assessment of Solo: A Star Wars Story Movie

The above being said, I think Solo: A Star Wars Story movie is one that is worth seeing even though there is no need to rush out to see it.  Unlike other movies that have a high interest factor such as Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, this movie in my opinion was just ok -- not mind-boggling. It could be that Han Solo’s character is not as interesting as those that follow him in other Star Wars movies such as Princess Leia, Anakin, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and other members of the Star Wars saga. However, the movie holds its own somewhat in entertainment value -- especially if you are a Star Wars fan.

Rating of Solo: A Star Wars Story Movie

Based on a rating of 1 to 5 stars with 5 stars being the best, I rate Solo: A Star Wars Story 3 ¼ stars.

Deadpool 2 Movie Review by Ms. H

Disclaimer:  The views expressed here are mine alone and do not represent those of allgames.com.  There are spoilers here, so if you have not seen Deadpool 2 yet and plan to do so, I recommend you see the movie before reading my review.

Introduction to Deadpool 2 Movie Review by Ms. H

Deadpool is mostly about references to superheroes and other pop culture in the dialogue.  In fact, I think the writers wanted to see how many superheroes Deadpool could name in one movie. As an aside, Deadpool also talks about John Wick who is not a superhero. On the pop culture side, Justin Bieber, Beyonce and others are mentioned.  Unfortunately by having Deadpool focus on these characters during the movie, there was little emphasis on Deadpool himself except to show him being comically destroyed and then of course resurrected.   However, I’m getting ahead of myself. Here is my review of Deadpool 2.

Movie Plot of Deadpool 2

The movie plot of Deadpool 2 is hackneyed and one that’s been told numerous times before. Specifically, Deadpool’s girlfriend is destroyed during a shoot-out after they talked about possible names for their imaginary baby. A few names for the baby mentioned in a negative way included Earl and Todd.  If your name is Earl or Todd, you may want to laugh this off as movie jokes so you will not get offended. Back to the plot -- Deadpool attacks the assailant and later visits his girlfriend in dream sequences.

In my opinion, good movies have an engaging and strong storyline regardless of the type genre.  Unfortunately, the storyline of Deadpool 2 was weak. The Deadpool 2 movie was filled with explosions, plenty of battles and dream sequences.  Spoiler Alert:  For instance, several times Deadpool would go into a dream sequence, talk with his deceased girlfriend and leave with a mission based on his interpretation of their conversation.  Of course, after he completed his deeds which all involved battles -- she indicated it was not time for him to be there. So in essence, you watched a movie filled with battle scenes based upon his interpretations of what she told him to do -- all for naught.

Huge spoiler alert: If you see Deadpool 2 -- you may want to stay until all, and I emphasize “all”  the credits have rolled to see a mini movie showing Deadpool 2 and Logan who is Wolverine.  I like that the Deadpool 2 movie starts with Deadpool in a scene with Logan (sort of) and the movie ends with these characters as well. Even though I do not approve of the violence --  this mini movie, in my opinion had more of an entertaining story than the totality of the Deadpool 2 movie.

Goal of Deadpool 2

Was Deadpool’s ultimate goal to save the young mutant boy or was he saving this character so he could be with his romantic interest in the dream?   Your guess is as good as mine. Since the writers were overly focused on Deadpool speaking dialogue that did not move the story along, this was not clear.  Additionally, it did not help that Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool would sometimes talk to you as an audience member, for example introducing you to an upcoming CGI battle scene in the movie, which could break your concentration on the movie.

Grossness of Deadpool 2

The level of grossness in Deadpool 2 was expected since I saw Deadpool 1.  However, in Deadpool 2, the writers went, in my opinion overboard when the character talked about a bodily function result that was in his costume.   Of course profane language was used a lot including the character who played the part of the 14 year old mutant. This character, Firefist, as played by Julian Dennison was not one of my favorite characters especially since he had a potty mouth and seemed to be walloping in self-pity while blaming others for his misfortunes.

Acting Abilities of the Actors in Deadpool 2

Ryan Reynolds in his role as Deadpool's acting was adequate as well as the other actors in the movie. However, the stand-out actor for me was Zazie Beetz who played the part of Domino. She was my favorite because there was no over or under acting done on her part.  She also played her role admirably as a character in an action movie, instead of a superhero critic. This job was left for Deadpool.

Assessment of Deadpool 2

I anticipated Deadpool 2 would be an enjoyable, humorous movie with a storyline.  During one of Ryan Reynolds promotional interviews for the movie, he indicated that unlike Deadpool 1, the writers were not tied to how Deadpool evolved, so they were not limited in what they could do with this movie.  Unfortunately, they seemed to have taken this to the extreme and should have reigned in or controlled Deadpool’s dialogue to try to strengthen the plot -- which they did not. On the plus side, there are some creative parts in the movie. For example, towards the beginning of the film, there is parody of Deadpool acting as Agent 007 along with humorous credits. This was entertaining, creative and well done. But overall, I left the movie with the impression that I had just seen a "disjointed" movie which was not what I expected.

If you watch movies for action alone,  you will probably like Deadpool 2. However, if you want to see a movie that has action along with a storyline that draws you in, Deadpool 2 may not be the movie for you.   I was initially going to give this movie 3 1/2 stars but decreased my rating by ½ point due to what Deadpool 2 says in the end about what makes up a family. If you watch the movie, you will know what I’m referring to.

Rating of Deadpool 2

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the best, I rate the Deadpool 2 movie 3 stars.

Breaking In Movie Review by Ms. H

Introduction to the Breaking In Movie Review by Ms H

It seems like ages since I saw the preview of Breaking In before the movie finally reached the theater.  Maybe there was an effort to tie in the release date with Mother’s Day. I’m not sure, but I’m happy to say the title of the movie is on point.  You will not have to wonder how they came up with the title of the movie. With that being said, here’s my review of the Breaking In movie.

Plot of the Breaking In Movie

As I alluded to previously, the title of the movie sums up exactly what the movie is all about. This story scenario has probably been told countless times before where the goal of the break in is for the robbers, etc. to take something of value -- in this case -- money, with unlucky guests or visitors caught in the middle.  If you see Breaking In, you will know without a shadow of a doubt who has a key leading role and who also did an admirable job of performing her part. In fact, I would go one step further and say that Gabrielle Union, the star of the movie, did most of the heavy lifting to make sure the audience got their money’s worth.

Acting Skills of the Actors in the Breaking In Movie

I think almost  everyone did an adequate job of performing their role, with Gabrielle Union being the stand-out actor.  The second best actor was the person who played the “deranged” captor who not only looked the part, but played his part well.  The actor who, in my opinion, needs to brush up on their acting skills is Ajiona Alexus who played the role of the daughter. She needs to remember that when you are in eminent danger, you don’t turn on and off the look of fear -- just like a faucet.  When you see the movie, you will know what I’m talking about.

There was a weak acting scene performed by Billy Burke  who played the role of bad guy Eddie. in the movie, he stands outside in front of a window with the shade going down automatically, His captors are inside the house looking at him. He just stood there, like he was waiting for the director to tell him to leave the scene.  A much more realistic motion would have been for him to bang on the glass window as if he was trying to get in -- instead of just standing there.

Contrived Incidences in the Breaking In Movie

There are certain parts of the Breaking In movie, where you may ask why didn’t the actor perform what should have been common sense actions -- if this was not a movie.  Spoiler Alert:  For example, why didn’t Billy Burke’s character destroy Gabrielle Union’s character instead of his “partner in crime” -- especially since he was the only one who knew the combination to the safe. During the roof scene when Gabrielle Union’s character was going to be overtaken by the two criminals -- why were there such long pauses, giving her a chance to get away.  You will find quite a few of these situations throughout the movie.

Major Spoiler Alert. I call this a major spoiler alert because if what should have happened -- occurred, the movie would have been over before it started.  Specifically, when a frantic call was made to 911 early on in the movie -- I’m certain the 911 operator got the location of the call and would have dispatched someone to check on the caller.  At the very least, the 911 operator would have called the number back to verify what was happening. In the interest of prolonging the movie-- this of course did not happen. I’m excusing these incidences as being the cost of making a movie where the writer/director want a certain movie outcome in the end.

Assessment of the Breaking In Movie

As I watched the movie, I got the impression it was being drawn out to last a certain amount of time.  For example, I did not see a need for the father to return when he really didn’t do much to help out the situation. However, I think in the interest of time, his entrance added more content to the movie. Due to the impressive acting done by Gabrielle Union, the movie was not a flop.  On the other hand, it was not overly good or overly bad either. In a word, the movie was ok. By the way, a plus for the movie was the suspenseful music score that sometimes played in the background during the movie.

Rating of the Breaking In Movie

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate Breaking In 2 ½ stars.
