Introduction to Mile 22 Movie Review by Ms. H

I intentionally did not watch previews or trailers for Mile 22 because I wanted to be kept in suspense as to what this movie was all about.  I knew it was a Mark Wahlberg movie and that was about it. When I watched Mile 22, I also found out that WWE personality Ronda Rousey is in this movie. However, if I was in her shoes, I don’t think I would have accepted this movie role. Instead, I would have waited for a film that showcased my fighting and other physical action-type talents. Hopefully, she has other movie projects in the works.  That being said, here is my review of the Mile 22 movie.

Plot of the Mile 22 Movie

Mile 22 is basically an action spy - surveillance type movie starring Mark Wahlberg as James Silva. It is a gritty action film, rather than the suave type you may be familiar with such as the James Bond movies.  There are probably lots of similar movies with a synopsis to stop dangerous actions from taking place with a short time limit to add to the drama -- however, I was pleasantly surprised that the storyline had a reveal at the end of the movie.

Actors in the Mile 22 Movie

In the Mile 22 movie, Mark Wahlberg tends to say his lines quickly -- sometimes popping the rubber band around his wrist as a reminder to keep calm.  In my opinion, other than these actions, Mark Wahlberg seems to play the same person in all his movies. In other words, to me he seems like a one-dimensional-type actor.

Interesting enough, as the movie progresses along, he loses his quick speech pattern, probably not by design. The other actors played their roles well; however, the stand out action star in Mile 22 to me was IKo Uwais for the reasons described in the action section below.

If you are a Ronda Rousey fan, you may be happy to see that she has a part in this movie as I alluded to in my introduction -- but I  think you will be disappointed in the reach of her role. She has a small part and her script and facial expressions mostly involved saying profanity and keeping a scowl on her face.  By contrast, Lauren Cohan (the other major female actor in the movie) as Alice Kerr had a more prominent role in Mile 22. I think if Ronda Rousey had won more fights (in real life) her role may have been bigger in this movie. Additionally, and unfortunately, the directors could have completely deleted Ronda Rousey’s scenes with little to no impact on the movie.

Action Scenes in the Mile 22 Movie

Mile 22 had a fair share of action from the beginning of the movie to the end. If you watch this movie, you will notice there are lots of explosions and violent scenes as well. In fact, this movie is rated R so you must be at least 17 years old to see it.

The fight scene that caught my interest was the hospital one where Iko Uwais, the actor who played Li Noor demonstrated some of his martial arts skills. Of course, these fights could have been performed by stunt men instead of the actor, but to me, it was still a highlight of the movie.

Regarding the violence, there is a graphic scene dealing with a car window and broken glass, that I think should have been omitted due to the graphic nature of this scene. It was so gross, I had to turn my head away from the movie screen when this scene appeared.

Lauren Cohan

Look-alike Actors in the Mile 22 Movie

Lauren Cohan has a slight resemblance to the star of the Blindspot TV series Jaimie Alexander. When I saw her initially on the screen, I thought Jaimie Alexander had shifted from Blindspot to work in this movie.  Of course, that was not the case since the actor was Lauren Cohan instead of Jaimie Alexander.

Assessment of the Mile 22 Movie

If I compared Mark Wahlberg's movie Mile 22 with Tom Cruise’s recently released blockbuster movie, Mission: Impossible -  Fallout -- the latter would win by flying colors. This is due in part because of the high caliber of action in the Mission Impossible Fallout movie, as well as the sense that you are watching a spectacular movie.  When I look back on the Mile 22 movie, the most I can remember is the barrage of shootings, fights and explosions. Spoiler Alert:  Additionally, some of the scenarios seemed unrealistic to me -- For example, why would IKO Uwais’ character suddenly decide to trade sides and became an ally instead of a foe?

On the other hand, a major plus for this movie was inclusion of women in the action scenes of the movie -- rather than having them sit or stand by the sidelines.

Overall, I believe you will enjoy Mile 22 if you like movies with lots of action, explosions and a hint of suspense.  I am giving this movie an extra ½ star rating because even though I could predict some of the ending scenarios of the movie -- there is one part that I did not see coming. If you watch the Mile 22 movie , you will find out what I’m referring to.

Rating of the Mile 22 Movie

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars, with 5 stars being the highest, I rate the Mile 22 movie 3 ½ stars.

The Meg Movie Review by Ms. H

Introduction to The Meg Movie Review by Ms. H

When I watched The Meg movie, I was ready to sit back, relax and enjoy what I thought would be an exciting movie.  Unfortunately, even though the movie had a few good parts, I thought this movie left a lot to be desired.

Storyline of The Meg Movie

If you saw the movie Jaws -- you probably already have a general idea of what The Meg is all about.  The difference is the shark in The Meg movie is supposedly prehistoric, lives far beneath the ocean and eventually emerges from the deep.

In some monster-creature type movies, the graphics-art team, etc. incites fright when you first see a monster-creature on the screen. This was not the case for The Meg. Spoiler Alert: The shark was not frightening to me; however, i do recall there was one jump scare during the movie.  When you think the meg is defeated-- out of nowhere, another one jumps near the boat.  Even with this jump scare, i think the sudden dramatic music, more so than the creature itself may cause you to jump a little.

Calibre of Actors in The Meg Movie

I was surprised to see Jason Statham appear as the star of this movie -- mainly because I’m accustomed to seeing him in other type action movies. By the way, he played the role of Jonas Taylor. That being said, I think he did an ok job in performing his part. In fact most of the actors did passable jobs in their roles in the movie. An interesting note -- If you watch this movie, you may notice a slight resemblance of the actor Li Bingbing with another non-actor.fullsizeoutput 1b37

Action and Suspense in The Meg Movie

Aside from the one jump scare described above, there was no actual suspense in this movie.  You knew the main actors would come out unscathed. On the other hand, there were some characters in the movie who did not make it to the end -- for no unconcernable reason -- except that the movie writer/director probably felt like there had to be casualties.

You will see  a lot of scientific mechanical/technical devices in the movie. Therefore, sometimes it seemed as if you were watching a science demonstration instead of an entertaining movie.  Additionally, it did not help that the movie seemed overly long -- almost 2 hours. This movie could have been shortened by not having Li BingBing duplicate missions that were done by Jason Statham which I viewed as a waste of time.  If he was going to attempt a mission and succeed, why have Li BingBing go on the same mission -- only to turn back. Additionally, just when you thought that the movie was coming to a close, something else happened to drag the movie along.

As you watch the movie, you may wonder why this deep-sea trip-mission is a private one, especially when a huge creature is involved.  Apparently there is a billionaire financing this underwater voyage. It seemed interesting to me that when this character needed help to destroy the huge shark, he  contacted the authorities. Previously, some of the other cast members individually tried to fight off the monster shark.meg lead

Assessment of The Meg Movie

Usually in underwater movie shots, you may see aesthetic marine life or scenery; however, in this movie, you will see some gruesome scenes, especially when they try to bait the shark. To add interest to the movie, I think more imagination and work could have gone into making the meg look more frightening especially since Computer Graphics Imagery (CGI) is used. Also, the storyline was cliche which involved someone retiring -- who initially refused to come out of retirement -- but eventually did. This scenario has played out many times before in numerous other movies.

Rating of The Meg Movie

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate The Meg movie 2 stars.

The Darkest Minds Movie Review by Ms. H

Introduction to The Darkest Minds Movie Review by Ms. H

When I saw the preview for The Darkest Minds movie, my first thought was the storyline centered around teenagers who are being hunted for some reason.  Also, based on the previews, it looked like the goal of these characters was to escape something -- similar to the movie Maze Runner: The Death Cure.  As an aside, in my opinion, The Darkest Minds movie was no match for the Maze Runner movie mainly because I think the other movie was more well crafted. However, I’m getting ahead of myself. Without further ado, here is my review of The Darkest Minds movie.

Movie Genre of The Darkest Minds Movie

The Darkest Minds movie is categorized as science fiction with the main characters possessing various superpowers.  Characters with the greatest superpowers which include mind control are labeled by the color orange. Whenever the main character played by Amandla Stenberg used her powers, her eyes would turn colors before she gave out a mind-control command etc.

Pros of The Darkest Minds Movie

It has been awhile since I’ve seen the actress Mandy Moore on the big screen instead of on B graded television movies.  I’m counting the return of Mandy Moore as a pro for the movie -- The Darkest Minds.

Another pro of The Darkest Minds movie was the choice of songs that played as background music during the movie.  One of the songs  that caught my attention was entitled “Find Me;” however, there were others as well.

Similar to most action movies, there is a major face-off or big battle toward the end of The Darkest Minds movie -- one that I will not divulge in my review.  You will know what I’m referring to if you see the movie.

Cons of The Darkest Minds

I believe the name of the movie should have been changed.  Instead of the title -- "The Darkist Minds" -- another name should have been used to tie it more closely to the storyline. Some of my suggestions would be “Strength in Your Colors”, Dangerous Hues”, or something else along those lines.  “The Darkest Minds” title gave me the impression that people were using their minds to plot evil things -- which does occur but is not what this movie is all about.

Additionally, The Darkest Minds movie was not suspenseful to me.  The writer and director tried to create twists and turns in the movie -- but each time, I knew what was being done.  So lack of suspense is another con for The Darkest Minds movie

To me, there was a lack of chemistry between the two main actors.  Previoulsy, the main character, Ruby Daily played a role opposite Nick Robinson in another movie entitled "Everything, Everything." As I watched this movie, I could envision Nick Robinson playing the role of Liam Stewart much more convincely than the actor who currently plays the part -- Harris Dickinson.

During the movie, there are flashbacks scenes that show a younger Rudy Daly. Unfortunately, I did not see a strong resemblance of this young actor to the older Ruby Daly -- even though to her credit, I think she played her role well.

In this science fiction movie, there are two major facets -- The League and a corrupt village composed of people (mostly teenagers) with special powers. Spoiler Alert: The places they could live safely seemed to be very limited; therefore, it seemed strange to me that at the end  of the movie, Rudy Daily would send Liam Stewart away because of some sort of potential punishment he would receive if he stayed with the League  -- especially when there seemed to be nowhere else for him to go.

Another con of the movie is the repetitive scenes in the movie where they would meet up with a group of people -- fight against them -- then later became non-enemies. I think there was too much switching back and forth between friends and foes.

Assessment of The Darkest Minds Movie

Fortunately, I saw this movie using a free movie ticket.  If I did not have the free movie ticket, I do not think I would have chosen to see The Darkest Minds.  It had the overall look of a tv movie instead of a big screen movie production. The action scenes were so-so and the connection between the two main actors were not believable to me.  However, as I alluded to above -- some of the background music was enjoyable to listen to.

Rating of The Darkest Minds Movie

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate The Darkest Minds movie 2 ¾ stars.
